Foxes favourite Ben Smith returned to Grace Road in December 2011 as the Club's batting coach.

Smith registered 18,777 first-class runs at an average of 40.66 in a distinguished career, including 8,606 for the Club. The batsman, who came through the system at Leicestershire, scored 20 of his 40 career centuries during his time at Grace Road.

Smith scored 1,000 runs in a season for Leicestershire on three occasions; two of those came during the County Championship winning years.

His highest first-class score of 204 came during the Championship-clinching win at Surrey in 1998 and he was leading run-scorer in that season with 1,165 at a brilliant average of 64.72. Smith also played an important role in the 1996 triumph, scoring 1,068 runs at 46.43.

He was also a fine one-day player, racking up 5,569 List A runs during his twelve-year association with the Club. That places Smith as Leicestershire’s 8th leading run-scorer in the history of List A cricket.

Smith went on to play and coach at Worcestershire and his new role will help the development of a young squad at Grace Road.
