Allenby wins POTM for June

Date: Thursday 09 July 2009

There were few surprises for June's Lumbers' player of the month award as the in-form Jim Allenby took the honours from Lumbers.

The all-rounder, who joined Leicestershire in 2005, won the fans’ vote via the Lumbers website after some outstanding form with the bat to secure the prize, polling more votes than closest rivals James Taylor, Josh Cobb and Paul Nixon.

His June began with a stunning century in the 70-run Twenty20 win over Nottinghamshire Outlaws at Grace Road. His 110 came off just 58 balls, with eight sixes and seven fours.

Later in the month Allenby made 69 from 45 balls with six fours and four sixes against Lancashire Lightning.

He and Matthew Boyce share their fourth consecutive 50-run stand in the next Twenty20 match, against Nottinghamshire, followed by 32 against Yorkshire.

After the first round of Twnety20 matches, Allenby led the Sky Sports Sixes League with twenty maximums, all scored during T20.

Allenby's form has not been limited to the one-day arena, and on the last day of the month, he scored 96 in the Championship game at Derbyshire, sharing a 177-run stand with Taylor.

For winning the Player of the Month Award, Allenby will recieve a gift from Lumbers. Managing director Dominic Gomersall said: “Jim played a tremendous series of Twenty20 matches with the bat, giving bowlers a hard time at home and away. He fully deserves the Player of the Month award.”

Senior coach Tim Boon was impressed with Allenby's contribution during the Twenty20 campaign. He said: "Jim's performances in Twenty20 were outstanding and helped Leicestershire to a good campaign.

"His batting at the top of the order contained power, control and timing."

Voting is now under way for July’s Lumbers Player of the Month. Voting is at www.lumbers.co.uk.
