Nadeem Malik could not bowl a ball in anger for Leicestershire’s first XI in 2009 after an injury-hit season. It was a major disappointment for the bowler after he had an outstanding first year at the Club.
Tim Boon snapped up Malik after his release by Worcestershire, and immediately had his faith repaid as the tall Nottingham-born bowler snapped up eight wickets in the County Championship opening win against Middlesex, including a career-best 5-51.
It was the first of three five-fors for the club, with Malik picking up a new career-best of 6-46 against Essex at Chelmsford along the way.
The bowler took 42 Championship wickets in all – the most by any County bowler – and picked up the Frank S Smith bowling award. Also bowled well in the limited-overs games and picked up a four-for in the T20 against his old club Notts.
An outswing bowler, his maiden first-class wicket was that of run machine Graeme Hick. Malik toured India with England under-19s in 2000-01 and was also a member of England's squad for the 2002 Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand.
Although Malik does not possess extreme pace, his height and away movement generates problems for batsmen. He first caught the eye at Grace Road in 2005, where he took eight wickets for Worcestershire in a Championship game. One of those was Stuart Broad, who was making his home debut.
He will be hoping his injury problems are behind him and that he can pick up where he left off in ’08 this time around.
