2009 was a difficult season for Sam Cliff, who suffered lots of injury problems and did not make may appearances for the Club. It was a great shame the youngster could not build on his progress made in ’08.
A bowler of decent pace who moves the ball predominantly back into the batsman, Cliff went from opening the bowling for Loughborough Town to carrying out the same duty for the first eleven by the end of 2008 – a remarkable achievement.
Cliff took four-fors in both List A and Championship cricket against Derbyshire to show the promise he has and finished top of the Championship bowling averages with eight victims at a cost of under 20 runs apiece.
Cliff started 2009 in the side and performed capably against Northamptonshire in his only Championship appearance.
He also opened the bowling in both the FPT and T20 with energy and enthusiasm and his setback came just as he was looking to establish himself.
A player with an excellent attitude and desire to do well, Cliff can bounce back from his injury problems to launch a challenge for a first-team place in 2010.
