Ben Raine is a powerful left-handed batsman who also bowls lively medium pace. His brilliant quickfire double century at Essex helped the Second XI win the Championship and complete their unprecedented treble last summer.
Raine has also made some useful batting contributions in the First XI as well as picking up plenty of wickets in all competitions. The 23-year-old opened the bowling in the final LV=CC game at Derbyshire and also bowled in the powerplay in the NatWest T20 Blast at times. Raine is a truly versatile performer, able to bat anywhere bowl whenever required and field in a range of positions.
He made a good impression in the Second XI throughout 2013, including scoring a half-century against his former employers Durham at Darlington CC, and also made the most of his opportunities in the first team.
The all-rounder was given his first-class debut at Glamorgan in 2013, where he picked up four wickets. Raine then made a career-best 72 at LV=CC Champions Lancashire and also bowled tidily in his two List A appearances at Glamorgan and Middlesex.
Raine previously made two appearances in the Durham first team, one first-class fixture and one List A game. Both of those came in 2011, with a first-class bow given against Sri Lanka A at the Riverside. His List A debut came against Warwickshire Bears at Edgbaston earlier that summer.
