Charlie Fox recently visited Highcross for the unveiling of a magnificent temporary sand sculpture built by world champion sculptor and artist Nicola Wood.
After five days of sculpting 10 tonnes of sand, Nicola, from Markfield, was joined by esteemed guests including Charlie, Lester Tiger, Solly the Lion and Alan Birchenall to unveil the completed sports themed sculpture in St Peter’s Square.
The statue was launched to celebrate a number of sporting events going on across the city, including the Special Olympics, which came to Grace Road today.
Sam French, Marketing Manager at Highcross, said: “The sporting summer of 2009 is immensely important for Leicester as the host city of the Special Olympics, but also for the Back the Bid campaign, which hopes to bring the World Cup to the city in 2018.
“Highcross was keen to show its support for the city and it was great to see all the mascots together to celebrate Nicola’s fantastic sculpture. Even without the sun and the sea, the sand sculpture is a fantastic sight at Highcross and it’s certainly attracted a lot of attention over the last few days.”
Prior to the unveiling of the completed sculpture, Nicola also hosted several sculpting workshops with local children as part of Highcross’ programme of summer activities, which are staged every Sunday until September 6.
Activities will also take place on selected weekdays during the school holidays including a Special Olympics late-night shopping event which is open to all, where stores will remain open until 9pm for the coaches, families and friends of the Special Olympics athletes on Wednesday July 29.
