Seconds Round-up

Date: Thursday 13 May 2010

Leicestershire 2nd XI have recently played games against Northamptonshire (Friendly) and Glamorgan (Trophy and Championship). Here is a round-up of the results and performances.

In the first game, Leicestershire Seconds played out a draw with Northants in a game that was affected by the weather.

Triallist Amar Rashid – brother of Yorkshire’s Adil – impressed during the game and he took 5-9 with his controlled leg spin in the first innings as Northants were restricted to 176 all out.

Nathan Hawkes took 3-15 and Alex Wyatt also claimed two wickets. While Nadeem Malik, Dan Masters and Harry Gurney all had a good workout.

Hawkes then unfortunately fell one run short of his century after a gritty innings as Leicestershire posted 253 in the first innings.

Lewis Hill (34) and Jacques du Toit (28) also made useful contributions against a strong visiting attack that included Lee Daggett, Luke Evans and David Willey.

County would have been hopeful of bowling Northants out again but with rain about and the pitch flattening out, the visitors made a much better fist of the second innings.

They closed on 291-4, with Rashid again the pick of the attack. He took 3-60, with Gurney the other wicket-taker.

In the Trophy game at Glamorgan at the SWALEC Stadium, the team lost by 42 runs despite a half-century from Josh Cobb.

Tom Maynard top-scored with 90 as Glamorgan posted 274-8. Nadeem Malik was the most successful bowler with 3-58, Sam Cliff took 2-52 and Gurney - who took the wicket of Maynard - claimed 2-55.

Wyatt was the other wicket-taker in the innings and County had a stiff run chase after Nick James (78) and David Brown (59) also played well.

Cobb led the reply with 51 from 71 balls batting at three but nobody could match Maynard's efforts.

Rashid (40), Gurney (33) and Lewis Hill (31) all chipped in but Leicestershire were 232 all out in the final over.

The team made up the defeat by having a great win in the championship game at Abergavenny. The margin was an impressive innings and 108 runs as Jigar Naik had a super game.

Naik made a century in the first innings along with Joel Pope and then took five second innings wickets as the team won comfortably.

Leicestershire posted 341-7 in their first innings with Naik (104*) and Pope (122) in fine form.

Glamorgan were then shot out for 74 as Dan Masters ran through the middle order with 4-10. Gurney took 3-18, while Cliff (2-12) and Malik (1-22) were also in the wickets.

After the seamers wreaked havoc in the first dig, it was the spinners who enjoyed themselves in the second.

Naik took 5-31 and Rashid 3-7 as Glamorgan posted 159. Cliff and Gurney also took wickets as County registered an impressive triumph.
