Leicestershire Seconds were doing well at the halfway stage of the Championship game against Derbyshire at Ashby Hastings but eventually lost by nine wickets.
Australian Joel Garrett (67), Liam Kinch (57) and Kadeer Ali (40) top-scored as Leicestershire made a healthy first-innings score of 364 and Derbyshire totalled 311-8 declared in their first knock.
Alex Wyatt, who was the only contracted Leicestershire staff member to play in the game, bowled extremely well and took 4-59 from 24 overs. Sam Cliff was also in good form in picking up two wickets while all-rounder Garry Park top-scored for Derbyshire with 97.
That meant the visitors, coached by former Leicestershire seamer AJ Harris, declared 53 behind and Leicestershire then suffered a tough period at the end of the day.
The team were 55-5 at stumps on day two as left arm seamer Ross Whiteley took 3-8 in three overs. Their 108-run lead was extended to 174 on the last day with Kadeer the top-scorer with 35.
Although Derbyshire chased down their target for the loss of one wicket, coach Lloyd Tennant was proud of the way a young team battled against a more experienced opposition.
