Another good workout for County

After a first day in which the batsmen dominated, the bowlers had more of a say on day two of the intra-club game at Grace Road.

Team 2 made 238 all out with Lewis Hill top-scoring with a well-crafted 52. Charlie Shreck and Jigar Naik each took three wickets for Team 1.

It meant Team 1 had a 130-run first innings lead and they extended that to 256 by stumps in posting 126-5 in their second knock.

Team 2 resumed on 71-2 and James Sykes (3) was trapped leg before by Shreck. Billy Root played nicely as he progressed to 23 before nicking the impressive Shreck to Niall O’Brien, while Tom Wells fell in the same manner two balls later.

Trialists Neil Pinner and Usman Tariq took the sting out of the attack by developing a 50-run partnership.

Tariq hit two straight sixes as Jigar Naik entered the attack but Pinner fell in the lunch over. Ben Raine, who bowled beautifully throughout the day, found the edge and Greg Smith took a good catch at second slip.

Tariq went for a well-played 44 after the interval as he drove Naik to Josh Cobb, who was one of two fielders fielding in the extra cover region.

Hill and Aadil Ali developed a partnership of 47 but Naik ended it by dismissing Ali (11) lbw and the spinner bowled Ollie Freckingham next ball.

Hill cut away to bring up a 66-ball 50 but was dismissed by the next ball from Rob Taylor. The batsman skied into the air, the chance went down but the batsmen ended up at the same end and Hill was run out.

Bowling figures for Team 1 were: Shreck 15-6-32-3, Ireland 12-2-45-0, Raine 15-7-27-2, Naik 23-6-83-3, Taylor 14.2-4-47-1.

Smith (1) got one that bounced from Freckingham and edged to Michael Thornely, and Ned Eckersley was then bowled by Nathan Buck as Team 1 slipped to 14-2 in their second innings.

Josh Cobb looked in good touch in making 14 but was then lbw to Wells. Opener Angus Robson held firm and then put on 55 with Niall O’Brien before Sykes had the in-form O’Brien (41) nicely stumped by Hill.

Robson battled to 33 (87b) before being brilliantly caught by Hill down the leg side off Freckingham. Raine 8* and Taylor 15* played watchfully to stumps, so an interesting final day awaits.

Bowling figures for Team 2 are: Freckingham 10-2-28-2, Buck 8-2-21-1, Wyatt 4-0-20-0, Wells 8-2-25-1, Sykes 8-2-23-1, Tariq 3-1-4-0.
