Cobb, Redfern and O'Brien in the runs

Josh Cobb made a superb century and Dan Redfern and Niall O’Brien also played well on an entertaining first day’s play in the intra-club game at Grace Road.

Cobb (124, 130b) shared 139 with Redfern (84, 73b) and 120 with O’Brien (91, 95b) as Team 1 posted 368 all out. James Sykes picked up 5-93 for Team 2.

There were three early wickets in the first innings. Angus Robson (17) got off to a good start but then pulled Ollie Freckingham to Aadil Ali at mid-wicket. Ned Eckersley (5) was bowled by a beauty from Nathan Buck before Alex Wyatt trapped Greg Smith (8) in front.

Cobb and Redfern then added an attractive stand that passed 50 in the first session of play, with the left-hander scoring 36 at that point.

Redfern struck three sixes in posting a 45-ball half-century before lunch and the team went in on 137-3 after 27 overs with Redfern on 51 and Cobb 36.

Cobb hit three successive fours in the second over after lunch and a single took the stand into three figures. Redfern struck three fours in the space of four balls in the next over as runs continued to flow.

A single took Cobb to a 75-ball fifty that included ten boundaries and the partnership was extended to 139 before Redfern was caught behind by Lewis Hill off Wyatt.

Cobb continued to pepper the boundary; his 100, which came from 113 balls, included 18 fours and three sixes. O’Brien went about his work impressively and the stand reached three figures before the keeper brought up a 58-ball half-century with a maximum. The landmark also included seven fours.

The stand was broken when Cobb edged off-spinner Usman Tariq to Neil Pinner at slip. That sparked a flurry of activity as Ben Raine (2) chipped Sykes to Tom Wells while Rob Taylor edged the spinner to Pinner at slip next ball. Sykes then pinned Jigar Naik (2) leg before.

O’Brien hit three fours in a Sykes over before the spinner picked up a fourth wicket in his next offering by dismissing Anthony Ireland leg before. O’Brien and Charlie Shreck (8*) added 21 for the last wicket before O’Brien skied Sykes and Michael Thornely took a good catch running round from cover to mid-off.

There were nine boundaries to open the reply and Thornely recorded six of them before Raine nipped one through his defences. Boyce moved to 34 before being trapped lbw by Taylor and Billy Root (13*) and nightwatchman Sykes (0*) got through to stumps.
