Seconds have good start in T20

Game One: Northants 134-7 (Buck 2-23, Naik 2-28) v Leicestershire - no result

Game Two: Northants 100-8 from 15 (Wyatt 4-18, Sykes 2-15) lost to Leicestershire 101-3 (Eckersley 56, Cobb 37*) by seven wickets

By Pete Johnson

Leicestershire took on Northamptonshire in two Second XI T20 games and came away with three points and some priceless time in the middle.

The second game was a convincing win for County, but unfortunately game one previously fell victim to the weather. It ended in a no result after the Northamptonshire Innings.

In game one, Leicestershire won the toss and asked Northamptonshire to bat, under cloudy skies interrupted with very occasional sunshine.

County's bowlers gave a good performance restricting Northants to 134-7 from their 20 overs, aided by some fine catches in the outfield. The only batsmen to show any resistance were James Kettleborough (42), Z Khawaja (34*), and Rob Keogh (27).

Bowling figures: Anthony Ireland 4-0-30-1: Nathan Buck 4-0-23-2: Jigar Naik 4-0-28-2: Rob Taylor 4-0-27-1: Josh Cobb 3-0-22-1: Michael Thornely 1-0-3-0.

However as the players left the field at the end of the innings rain began to fall. An early lunch was taken during which time the rain got much heavier.

The rain had caused problems with the bowlers run up at the Abingdon Road End of the ground, and game 1 was abandoned as a no result, one point each.

After a couple of inspections by the umpires and sterling work from the Groundstaff, game two got underway at 4.48pm but was restricted to 15 overs a side due to the 6.45pm cut off time.

Northamptonshire won the toss and elected to bat. County made quick inroads into the Northants batting, and had them 51-5 after 7.1 overs, Alex Wyatt picking up 4-18 from his three overs.

Again Keogh (31) and Khawaja (25) offered token resistance, aided by David Willey (23). Northants totalled 100-8 from their 15 overs. Bowling figures: Wyatt 3-0-18-4: Ollie Freckingham 3-0-28-1: Taylor 2-0-10-0: James Sykes 3-0-15-2: Thornely 2-0-9-1: Cobb 1-0-5-0: Dan Redfern 1-0-11-0.

County lost a couple of early wickets in Greg Smith (1) and Redfern (0) but Cobb (37*) and Ned Eckersley (56) put them in total command before Eckersley was dismissed with the score on 92.

Eckersley's 50 came up from 33 balls (3x6/4x4) after 10.3 overs with the score on 85-2. Matt Boyce (2*), joined Cobb to see County home on 101-3 from 12.2 overs. Leicestershire 2 Points, Northamptonshire 0 points.

Bowling figures: White 2.2-0-18-0: Barrett 2-0-13-0. Reed 3-0-13-0: Burton 3-0-34-0: Coetzer 2-0-18-0.

Leicestershire Second XI now travel to Chelmsford on Thursday to face two more Second XI Trophy matches against Essex before the First XI get their NatWest T20 Blast campaign underway against Derbyshire at Grace Road on Friday evening (5.30pm).
