Taylor in top five

James Taylor has become the fifth youngest batsman in England to make a double century in first-class cricket.

The 19-year-old is in excellent company, given WG Grace, Graeme Hick and David Sales are also in the top five in a list compiled by Wisden.

Edward Craig completes the list, and Taylor's 207* also ensured he became the second youngest Englishman in the history of the County Championship to achieve the feat behind David Sales.

Sales was 18 years and 234 days at the start of the match when he made an unbeaten 210 against Worcestershire at Kidderminsterin 1996 for Northants, with Grace, Hick and Craig all making their scores in other first-class fixtures.

All told, Taylor became the 46th youngest batsman of all-time in first-class cricket to make 200, with Pakistan’s Hasan Raza top of the list. He was believed to be aged 15 years and 213 days at the start of the game where he made 204* for Karachi Whites v Bahawalpur.

Taylor also became the first teenager in Leicestershire's history to make a double century, beating Les Berry’s long-standing record.

Berry made his huge score against Worcestershire at Ashby-de-la-Zouch in August 1928 aged 22 years and three months, so Taylor took two years and eight months from that 81-year-old record.

Everyone at Leicestershire congratulates James on his achievement; we would also like to thank Wisden for making their research available to us.
