Slow left arm spinner Claude Henderson is a key member of the Club, and everyone was pleased to learn he was able to sign a new two-year deal over the winter after being granted British residence.
Henderson had to wait patiently for chances in the 2009 season following the form of Boeta Dippenaar, HD Ackerman and Iain O’Brien. Leicestershire had announced their brave selection plans to selected eight English-qualified players and Henderson missed out at times.
However, he always performed well when coming into the team and never lets anyone down. Henderson got through an awful lot of hard work, particularly in August, where he bowled consecutive Championship spells of 64 and 67 overs, breaking the Club record for lengthiest stints twice in a week.
The spinner is a model of consistency who is often the first bowler turned to in the one-day arena when the team need a wicket or to stem the rate.
Has excelled in Twenty20 cricket, where he barely goes for more than a run a ball and was a key figure in Leicestershire’s two cup triumphs of 2004 and 2006. He also helped his native Cape Cobras into the Champions League semi-finals in India.
The former South Africa test player is also more than handy with the bat and his most memorable innings came at Cheltenham in 2006, where Henderson trailblazed away to clinch a famous run-chase.
Appointed spin bowling coach after the 2007 campaign and enjoys that role. He has aided Jigar Naik’s development and the duo work well together both on and off the field.
