A hard-hitting batsman who broke into the first team in 2008 after playing in the East Anglian leagues and County second XI from 2005-2008, Jacques du Toit has the ability to take a game away from any given opposition.
His calm yet aggressive manner at the wicket was critical in helping the Foxes win a nervejangling Twenty20 game at Durham Dynamos last season, as he hit Paul Collingwood for a six and a four off the final two balls to clinch the seven runs required to win.
du Toit also batted well in one of only two Championship appearances he made, scoring a superb unbeaten century as part of the unbroken 230-run stand which saw James Taylor become the club’s youngest double-centurion.
Those were two enjoyable moments of the whole season, but although du Toit showed his ability in those two competitions, he was not as destructive in List A cricket – which was surprising given he had a good 2008 season.
Indeed, the limited-overs knock of 144 against Glamorgan at Colwyn Bay in ’08 was a joy to behold and showed his quality. Many observers on that day noted it was the best one-day innings seen for some time.
However, he couldn’t quite kick on in the longer form of the one-day game and will be looking to address that in 2010.
Also an athletic fielder and useful medium-pace bowler, du Toit has plenty to offer the side in a number of capacities and will hope to establish himself in the side in 2010.
