A talented all-round sportsman, Wayne White had a promising first season for Leicestershire and signed a new two-year deal over the winter.
White had an outstanding Twenty20 campaign. Having never played a T20 fixture before joining the Club, he was an ever-present in the line up and bowled brilliantly in a number of high-pressure situations which is a sign of great progress.
White also fielded well and although he did not get many opportunities with the bat in Twenty20, but demonstrated his capabilities in that department in other forms of the game.
He started with great promise by registering his highest first-class score of 43 in the first first-class game of the season against Loughborough UCCE, and ended with his maiden half-century under his belt after making 68 against Glamorgan in September.
That was part of a great week for White, who also posted his highest List A total of 46* against the same opposition and claimed a career-best 4-36 in the same game. He also produced a number of good shows with the ball in first-class cricket.
Earlier in his career, White resisted the temptation to chase a career in football to play cricket for Derbyshire.
He had previously played for Derby County’s footballing youngsters and also at semi-professional level in goal for Long Eaton. He also played for Burton Albion and Gresley Rovers as a youngster, which explains his agility in the field.
White’s early career at Derbyshire was troubled by injury after a promising debut in his county's only victory of the 2005 season against Somerset, where he took four wickets.
White picked up his maiden first-class five-wicket haul in 2007 against Northants, but decided to find a new home for 2009. The paceman impressed County coaches during a pre-season trial and continued to progress.
Known as ‘Chalky’, White will continue to work hard on all aspects of the game after a good breakthrough season. He will now look for more consistency in his performances which will help him to push on in 2010.
