O'Brien stars as Ireland beat Taylor's Scotland

Leicestershire teammates Rob Taylor and Niall O’Brien found themselves in an unusual position in Dubai today.

O’Brien is used to catching Taylor's deliveries behind the stumps or batting with his county colleague but today came up against him.

Scotland played Ireland in the third match of the Dubai Triangular Series and O'Brien guided Ireland home by three wickets with a masterful unbeaten 80.

Taylor made 17 as Scotland, who were 114-6 at the halfway stage, got up to 216-9 thanks in large to 86 from Matt Machan.

Taylor (7-0-39-1) struck a key blow early on by trapping dangerman Ed Joyce leg before and Ireland were 7-2 at that stage. They were 38-3 when Paul Stirling was dismissed and were 143-6 in the 30th over but O’Brien kept calm and guided his side to victory.

The left hander struck three fours and two sixes in his 106-ball knock. A 61-run stand for the seventh wicket with John Mooney (36, 45 balls) ultimately proved decisive.

Ireland have now won both matches and Scotland have suffered two defeats in their opening fixtures.
