Shahzad added to Foxes squad

Leicestershire CCC have added fast bowler Ajmal Shahzad to their squad for the Specsavers County Championship game against Durham following a number of injuries to the seam attack.

Ben Raine, Zak Chappell and Richard Jones were already ruled out of the fixture and they will be joined on the sidelines by Clint McKay and Mathew Pillans, who have failed fitness tests ahead of today’s match.

McKay is currently managing a back problem while Pillans picked up an injury towards the end of his spell against Lancashire Lightning.

Given McKay and Pillans were touch-and-go at the end of the NatWest T20 Blast game, Leicestershire CCC undertook the ECB process to allow Shahzad to take his place in today’s squad.

Huddersfield-born seamer Shahzad, who left Sussex earlier this season, has impressed while on trial with the club this week.

Shahzad has represented Yorkshire, Lancashire, Nottinghamshire and Sussex as well as playing for England in all three formats. He has claimed 517 wickets across all formats in a career that started in 2006, including four test match wickets for England at a very impressive average of 15.75.

Leicestershire CCC Head Coach Pierre de Bruyn said: “Ajmal has impressed us this week and given we now have so many injuries to our seam department, his experience and quality means that he is a useful signing for us.”

With McKay and Pillans now ruled out, Leicestershire will now choose from a 14-man squad for today’s game with Durham, which is scheduled to get underway at 11am.
