Foxes life is Taylor-made for Tom

New Leicestershire CCC signing Tom Taylor already had fond memories of the Fischer County Ground before making his recent move.

Taylor came through the Academy system at Derbyshire CCC and made his first-class debut against Leicestershire CCC here in 2014.

The seamer played 25 first-class games in total including Leicestershire CCC’s visit to the 3aaa County Ground in 2017. Taylor took four of the 23 wickets to fall on a good batting surface in which five batsmen posted scores between 118 and 188, showing impressive pace.

Taylor said: “Making my debut here was an incredibly special moment, I remember running up the hill for six or seven overs in my opening spell, which was a great experience.

“I’m really looking forward to now calling the Fischer County Ground my home ground and on a personal and team level I want to have a successful time here.”

Taylor’s move to the Foxes came about quite quickly after a catch-up phone call with John Sadler, who coached the seamer at Derbyshire CCC.

As well as working on bowling, Taylor has been batting in the nets with Sadler. He is a very useful batsman as demonstrated by a top score of 80 in first-class cricket. Taylor also hit a century against Leicestershire Second XI, again showing his worth with the bat.

“After talking to Sads [John Sadler] I spoke with Paul Nixon a few times on the phone and since I’ve been here we’ve had several chats,” said Taylor.

“I love Nico’s [Paul Nixon’s] enthusiasm, he is so passionate about cricket and Leicestershire CCC and I can’t wait for the season to start. I’m really positive about what we can achieve.

“The lads have been really welcoming from the moment I arrived. I already knew Parky [Callum Parkinson] from when he was at Derby and I’m living with him at the moment.

“I can’t wait for the season to get started now, the lads are all really positive for it and I believe we can have a positive campaign in all three competitions.

“It’s been pretty challenging with the fitness testing we have been undergoing in the last few weeks and we’ve started working on our skills now, which means I’ve been doing some bowling as well as working on my batting with Sads [John Sadler].”

Knowing Callum Parkinson and John Sadler has helped Taylor to quickly settle in at the club. Taylor has been getting to know places to visit in Leicester, including a trip to the King Power Stadium with teammates as Leicester City beat Fleetwood Town 2-0 in an FA Cup replay.

As well as throwing himself into his cricket, Taylor has been question master for the club’s new Teammates feature as well as taking part in a Get to Know video for the fans.

He said: “I’ve also had good fun being question master in the Teammates feature the club is doing. It’s a laugh but is also a good way to learn a bit more about a few of the lads.”
