Nixon excited by Nabi's quality
Head Coach Paul Nixon has seen a ‘spin to win’ philosophy prosper for Leicestershire Foxes in T20 in the past and was therefore delighted to land Mohammad Nabi as overseas player for the 2018 season.
The Afghanistan star first came on to the scene as a quality off-break bowler, and although he has maintained those skills, Nabi has also become a matchwinner with the bat.
To underline how highly Nixon rates Nabi, he sees the potential for the all-rounder to have the same impact as the Foxes’ all-time leading wicket-taker in T20 history, Claude Henderson.
“Leicestershire Foxes have done so well in T20 in the past and there is no doubt that spin has played a major role in that,” said Nixon.
“Nabi is somebody who could be our new Claude Henderson, who I had the pleasure of keeping wicket to for many years.
“Claude was a master of his trade and Nabi is a great spin bowler who can not only give us that control in the middle overs but also bowl in the powerplay too if needed. And then we also have his batting, which is golddust.
“We’re realistic in terms of making progress this season but in T20 it’s about getting the tactics right, getting the thinking right, and then executing well. Nabi’s role is going to be crucial in that and we can’t wait to get to know him as a person and utilise all of his experience.”
Nabi’s route to the international scene is inspirational, being a key part of the heartwarming story that has seen Afghanistan establish themselves as a hugely competitive side in world cricket.
They may not be able to have huge stadiums and the crowds in their home country that are enjoyed by other nations, but they made it to the world stage through a mixture of desire, hard work and lots of skill.
Nixon feels that Afghanistan’s journey has played a key role in shaping Nabi not only as a fine cricketer, but also as a strong character.
“Nabi has travelled the world playing cricket at the top level and has been very successful with both bat and ball,” said Nixon. “His character has really shone through.
“He’s played with a former Fox in Andrew McDonald at Melbourne Renegades and had success in the Big Bash, which is testament to his skill as a player and character as a person.
“Nabi’s economy rate is phenomenal in both ODIs and T20 and his averages with both bat and ball are also good. Anything under sevens is world-class in T20 across a few matches, let alone over 160 games.”
