Museum

Please note that following redevelopment work, Leicestershire County Cricket Club are exhibiting some items in the Charles Palmer Suite but the Museum display cabinets are no longer in the building. The club is currently exploring alternative locations on the ground to place the Museum.

In 1995 Mr. P.W. Freer, a member of the Management Committee, held discussions with Chief Executive, Tony Norman and Marketing Manager, Nicola Holyoake and offered to sponsor the museum in the format that it is today, situated in the Charles Palmer Suite.

This offer was accepted by the Club and a sub-committee was formed. The museum exhibits known as ‘Discovering Cricket at Grace Road’ was formally opened in 1996 by the then President, Mr. B.A.F. Smith.

In those early days we met and had several meetings with Mr. Eric Snow, at that time Leicestershire’s Historian, someone we are indebted to for his knowledge and his diligence in collecting, over a number of years, a lot of the items we have on display in the Museum.

We also have to remember Sylvia Michael for all her hard work and dedication in those early days cataloging and recording all the items we have on display and in our store cupboards. Unfortunately Sylvia passed away in 2008 and is greatly missed by all at Leicestershire County Cricket Club

The exhibition is open throughout the year for both booked visits and ad hoc visits and is also an added attraction to the Club on match days. The museum provides a facility for the young and old alike that informs them about the game of cricket, its history and particularly Leicestershire County Cricket Club.

The exhibition has been built around the County Club’s extensive collection of cricket memorabilia relevant to the development of cricket in Leicestershire and Rutland. The elegant display cases surrounded by wall panels includes historic cricket equipment, artefacts, photographs and information, the evolution of cricket equipment, life size figures of some of the personalities of the past and the successful achievements of Leicestershire teams. The project also ensures the preservation of cricketing memorabilia which will form part of the Club’s history for many years to come.

We have a policy of changing the specimens on display accordingly to specific themes, or to specimens relating to visiting teams, the content of the displays will cover topics from a wide range of themes. We have to thank our design advisor, Rob Ogilvie, for his expertise and ideas in bringing our display cases to the high standard you see in the Museum today.

The history of the game of cricket and its origins, including a chronology of key dates and events.

The history of the cricket grounds in Leicestershire, in particular Grace Road.

The rules of the game and how they evolved, including a glossary of terms used within the game.

The technology and science of the game.

The colourful personalities both past and present.

The simple apparel and equipment used in the past, compared with the modern sophisticated equipment used today.

The evolution and construction of modern day cricketing equipment i.e. balls, bats and protective gear.

The ‘map’ of fielding positions.

The successes and achievements of the County sides over the years.

The collection of historic artefacts, of which 85% is Leicestershire connected.

Recently all the scores since the beginning of the Club’s first-class history have been put on the internet. The Club’s photographic history is now also being transferred to the website, particularly photographs of past and present players with their biographical details. Team photographs, fully named, will also be transferred. We have to thank our Honorary Archivist Richard Holdridge and Dennis Lambert, the Club's statistician for many years, for their diligence and time given in sourcing and uploading this information onto the Cricket Archive website and the Leicestershire County Cricket Club website.

There is an incomplete record of team photographs, therefore we should be glad to receive any old team photographs from members to help complete the list, particularly 1896, 1898, 1900, 1906, 1919,1921 and 1923 seasons. Photographs of Players would also be welcome.

At the same time the Club recognises that past players have been nurtured, in many cases, by local Village and Town clubs, for example George Geary came from Barwell. The Club would be pleased to include any information members may have regarding other players.

Displays featuring donated memorabilia are on view and a trophy cabinet displays various cups won by the Club and individual players over the years.

Please contact the Honorary Archivist if you have any items of interest which we can display in the future or if you are able to help with any of the missing photographs.

Friends of Grace Road (FoGR) have blitzed their record donation, presenting an incredible £24,600 to the Club thanks to their fundraising efforts across 2024.

The supporter-led group of volunteers have made an end-of-season contribution worth £20,000, which will be spent on upgrading the Uptonsteel Stand ahead of the upcoming campaign.

It follows a mid-season donation of £4,600, which was spent on essential repairs across Uptonsteel County Ground, chiefly repairs to the blotter and the manual scoreboard clock.

Previous donations have helped renovate the Abacus Flooring Members’ Stand and Dafabet Stand, as well as open the Maurice Burrows Balcony – each investment helping to enhance the matchday viewing experience.

Friends of Grace Road Chair, Mike Siddall, said: “I am proud that our small group of volunteers has managed to raise such a fantastic amount of money to support the Club.

“Our thanks go to all those who have supported FoGR during the season by way of purchasing cakes, 50/50 raffle tickets, Lucky Squares or taking part in our quiz.

“Having funded the refurbishment of the seats in the Members’ and Dafabet Stands, we are pleased that the money will go towards the renovation of the Uptonsteel Stand.”

Leicestershire CCC CEO, Sean Jarvis, said: “We are incredibly grateful to the Friends of Grace Road for their outstanding generosity. A donation of that amount is testament to the hard work of their volunteers, as well as the immense popularity of their homemade cakes and fundraising events throughout the year.”

Supporters can try 2025’s first offering of delicious cakes during Leicestershire’s opening home fixture against Derbyshire, starting Friday 11 April.

Friends of Grace Road, the volunteer led supporters’ group raising funds for LCCC, held a successful 9th Annual Quiz night last Friday with twenty-six teams competing for the FoGR Pat Ball Shield.

The quiz was won by “Loads of Wisden”, comprising Mark & Awen Simpson, Paul Gudgeon and Leigh Sharman. Leicestershire member, Tim Day, kindly donated the prizes with members Roger & Rosemary Stead asking the questions.

Leicestershire players were represented by Chris Wright and Matt Salisbury, alongside former physio Will Garvey, with the event raising £700 for FoGR in support of the Club.

The photo shows FoGR Chair Mike Siddall presenting the Pat Ball Shield to the winning team “Loads of Wisden.”

Mike Siddall has been appointed Chair of Friends of Grace Road (FoGR), the volunteer supporters’ group that raises funds for the Club.

Mike, former CEO of Leicestershire CCC, takes over the role from Roy Bent, who had been interim Chair since the late John Stew retired due to ill health.

Discussing his appointment, Mike said: “I would like to thank Roy for his hard work as interim Chair and for the many years of service he has given to FoGR.

“The group will continue with its main fundraising activities, which include selling its famous home-made cakes & hot drinks from the kiosk on the ground floor of the Meet, selling 50/50 raffle tickets at T20 games, running Lucky Squares competitions, and holding an Annual Quiz night each November.

“Our number of volunteers has dwindled over recent years and we have decided to concentrate on our four key fundraising activities. We are always on the look-out for more volunteers and helpers – if anyone would like to assist us, please call me on 07907 892665.”

FoGR’s fundraising endeavours date back to November 1970, with the Friends' first contribution to the Club presented in June 1971.

The first event, a rummage sale, was the catalyst for a long and varied series of activities, now spanning more than 50 years. Dances, skittle evenings, ‘knit-ins’, fashion shows, book sales, Christmas markets, treasure hunts and sports quizzes, to name a few, have all helped raise funds for the Club.

FoGR have gone from strength to strength since, handing over a record donation of £15,000 following the 2022 campaign, which has since been reinvested into facilitating refurbishments at Uptonsteel County Ground.

The Leicestershire Cricket Society

The Leicestershire Cricket Society has been in existence for over 10 years and has a membership of over 180. The society hold monthly meetings in the Charles Palmer Suite at Grace Road at 7.30pm or 1.30pm with the Fox Bar open for refreshments. There is a varied programme of speakers to suit all tastes with the common denominator being a mutual love of the game of cricket.

New members are very welcome at an annual fee of £20, Under 21 / Full-time students £10 and non-members pay £5 on the night. One of the members runs a second-hand bookstall at each meeting selling cricket and sports-related books and a raffle is held to raise funds for the Society.

Meetings take place over the winter months usually starting in October.

What to do if you have a concern.

Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility we all have a role to play, if you see anything that concerns you report it, either to a member of staff, or on line.

If you have any concerns about a child or adult at risk or the behaviour of an adult towards either of these, you should share these immediately. It is natural to feel a little anxious about reporting a safeguarding concern, but remember, it is not your responsibility to decide if abuse or neglect has taken place, but you do have a duty of care to share any concerns you have.

There are a number of ways to report a concern:

If it is an emergency and someone is at immediate risk, then call the Police.

To your Club or County Safeguarding Officer (as above)
