Sam Bates became the latest graduate of the flourishing Leicestershire CCC Academy during the 2020 season, when he signed his first professional contract with the Club ahead of the Bob Willis Trophy fixture against Nottinghamshire CCC.
Wicket-keeper Bates joined fellow Academy graduates Ben Mike, Harry Swindells, Alex Evans, Sam Evans, Nat Bowley and Lewis Hill in the First XI frame following an impressive spell for the Club’s Second XI.
A left-handed batsman, Bates made an excellent century against Northants Second XI, and also opened the batting later in the season against a Lancashire attack that included England international James Anderson.
Bates was unfortunate to not make his professional debut during the 2020 season, however, signed a contract extension at Grace Road in December, 2020 as he worked alongside fellow Leicestershire-born wicketkeeper's; Harry Swindells and Lewis Hill, fighting for a spot in the First XI under the tutelage of legendary Foxes wicketkeeper, Paul Nixon.
