My Second Innings

Leicestershire County Cricket Club is committed to using the great game of cricket to make a positive impact in the local community.

Over the last two years, the club has raised awareness on the issue of domestic abuse and violence, including working alongside White Ribbon UK on an annual fixture at the Fischer County Ground.

From Sunday, November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to today, Monday, December 10, Human Rights Day, the 16 Days of Action against Domestic Violence campaign has been running.

The aim of the campaign is to create a future where violence against women and girls is no longer tolerated or legitimised.

Given Leicestershire CCC was already involved in raising awareness of these crucial issues, and to mark the 16 Days of Action Against Domestic Violence campaign, the club has produced a powerful video called ‘My Second Innings’.

It is a moving, powerful documentary featuring somebody that has experienced domestic abuse and violence. It explains how cricket has played a key role in that person’s life, and how Community Engagement Officer Amna Rafiq reintroduced the victim to the sport.

An extract is available here: “My childhood memories are laced with cricket. When I think about my childhood days at home, I think about my mum cooking in the kitchen producing food that fills our tummies and warms our heart.

“My dad at work and my young brother walking around the house with a cricket bat, continuously and laboriously hitting a cricket ball, over and over again. Cricket bags and coffins were fun to go through as children.

“When you say what does cricket mean to me… I think a new life. It built my confidence, my self-esteem and my social skills, and it brought me back to life.

“Amna pushed me forward, I undertook my training for Level 1 and 2. When I thought I could not Amna ignored me and said you can - and you will. Amna was right.”

The video can be watched HERE.
