Smith joins as Second XI Coach

Leicestershire CCC is delighted to announce that Tom Smith has been appointed as Second XI Coach at the Fischer County Ground.

Smith had a highly successful career as a player at Lancashire CCC, including winning County Championship Division One alongside Paul Horton in 2011, and being named as captain ahead of the 2015 season.

The 32-year-old Smith completes a new-look coaching staff which includes Head Coach Paul Nixon, Assistant Coach John Sadler, Head Bowling Coach Matt Mason, Academy Director Andy Siddall, Spin Bowling Coach/Head Scout Carl Crowe, Lead Physiotherapist Will Garvey and Head of Strength & Conditioning Greg Hollins.

Smith played alongside Nixon during a loan spell at Leicestershire CCC in 2008. The all-rounder made nine appearances in all competitions, scoring 290 runs at an average of 32.22 while also collecting 17 wickets. Smith had great success in both formats throughout his career, scoring 7,720 runs and taking 376 wickets.

He was sadly forced into an early playing retirement in 2016 and has since forged a successful career in coaching, including spells with Lancashire Thunder in the Kia Super League and with England Women in preparation for their triumphant ICC World Cup campaign.

Smith said: "This is an exciting opportunity for me at Leicestershire County Cricket Club and it is great to be working alongside Nico [Paul Nixon], John Sadler, Matt Mason and all of the coaching staff.

"I enjoyed my time here as a player alongside Nico so it was an easy decision to make. I’m really looking forward to being part of a fresh coaching team at the Foxes and can’t wait to get started."

Leicestershire CCC Head Coach Paul Nixon said: "Tom is a brilliant bloke who I had the pleasure of playing alongside here. He was a top-class cricketer who was highly skilled across all formats. Tom was named as captain of Lancashire at a young age which shows his pedigree.

"He has since upskilled his coaching CV with work at Lancashire both in the men’s and women’s game and has also been working with the England Women team. We’re delighted to have Tom on board with us."

Leicestershire CCC has also announced that Michael Carberry has been appointed as the new captain in all competitions for the 2018 season. Carberry was part of the Ashes tour in 2013-14 and also has vast experience of county cricket after making his first-class debut in 2001.

Leicestershire CCC Chief Executive Wasim Khan MBE added: "We are delighted to finalise our new-look team under the leadership of Paul Nixon. Everyone at the club is looking forward to the 2018 season."
