Nixon to link up with Challengers
Leicestershire County Cricket Club can announce that Head Coach Paul Nixon will join Chattogram Challengers as Head Coach for the 2019/20 Bangladesh Premier League season.
Nixon will fly out to meet up with his new team in the coming week as the Challengers’ BPL campaign gets underway on Wednesday, December 11 against Sylhet Thunder.
Nixon spoke about how the opportunity came about. He said: “It was pretty similar to recent years really, when I have been out to the Caribbean Premier League.
“The franchises have their owners, and the Challengers reached out to me to be their Head Coach. I am really honoured. I have known people over in Bangladesh for a while now and have tried to get things over the line in recent years.
“This year we managed to get it over the line, and it falls at the perfect time with Leicestershire as it is over the Christmas period meaning I won’t be away from the guys for too long.
“It is really nice that the club [Leicestershire CCC] have let me take this opportunity to help further my development, and it benefit the club as well.”
Following successes in the Caribbean Premier League and his experiences at the helm in Leicestershire, Nixon is looking to draw on his knowledge whilst out in Bangladesh but is also looking to further his knowledge and experience of the game.
He said: “There are a lot of good, local players out in Bangladesh – it is the second most watched competition in the world behind the IPL [Indian Premier League] so it is a fantastic and opportunity for all the players to do well and put themselves in the shop window.
“It is going to be a highly competitive tournament, and if I can go over there and learn more about spin, learn more about the players who are available as overseas players then that would be great.
“Watching all of the games, and gaining information from the analysts was a crucial part of the decision to go out there.
“We want to do well here at the Foxes and there will be some stars out there [in Bangladesh]. We unearthed a star in Hassan Azad and there are more to come.”
During his stint in South Asia, Nixon will be working alongside international players such as Imad Wasim and Lendl Simmons. He said: “I know Imad [Wasim] very well from the Caribbean Premier League.
“He played with us for a couple of years out and there was a guy that I would go to talk about Pakistan players. He was very proactive about Muhammad Abbas when I spoke to him.
“Having his [Wasim’s] seal of approval – because he knows county cricket, he knows English wickets and he knows the workload that it takes over here – so having someone of that calibre who knows international cricket and county cricket is immeasurable.
