REPORT | Heavy rain at Wantage Road saw the second day of Northamptonshire CCC’s Specsavers County Championship match with Leicestershire CCC abandoned without a ball bowled.

The teams turned up to the ground ahead of day two as the rain continued to descend on Wantage Road. Precipitation began in the early hours of the morning and had continued up until the original scheduled start time of 11.00am.

Before then, Umpires Neil Mallender and Rob White - who replaced the ill Billy Taylor at the beginning of the day - informed everybody that there would be no play before lunch.

An early lunch was taken at 12 noon, and another inspection was scheduled just before that time.

But with rain continuing to fall, the umpires officially abandoned the day without a ball being bowled due to the steady, persistent rainfall which had caused puddles to form upon the playing surface.

If the skies clear ahead of day three, Leicestershire CCC will resume at six without loss replying to Northamptonshire CCC’s 299. Chris Wright took Leicestershire CCC best figures of four for 78 on the first day.
