Evans takes three for Seconds

SECOND XI CHAMPIONSHIP | Leicestershire CCC v Derbyshire CCC

SCORE | Leicestershire CCC v Derbyshire 98 for 6

REPORT | By Pete Johnson

Loughborough Town CC’s Park Road home played host to Leicestershire for the third game of their 2019 SEC campaign, the opponents were Derbyshire CCC. The Foxes record to date in the competition this season is won one and drawn one.

Play was severely curtailed due to rain, but in the 36.2 overs play that was possible, Leicestershire CCC reduced Derbyshire CCC to 98 for six. The leading wicket-taker was Academy seamer Alex Evans, who weighed in with three for 25.

Triallist Louis Kimber, who played for Kent Second XI against Leicestershire last week at Kibworth, was making his debut for Leicestershire 2s. Kimber has also featured for Loughborough MCCU.

Tom Taylor skippered Leicestershire, his opposite number Daryn Smit called incorrectly, and Taylor opted to field first. It was good to see both Taylor and Ben Mike returning after injury, and working their way back to full fitness. There were some 20 spectators present, the majority of whom were all familiar faces, when the play began under grey skies, with rain forecast for later in the day.

Derbyshire CCC had an analyst present, who sat alongside the Scorers. The Scorers were housed in the West Wing of the Pavilion, right behind the bowler’s arm. Gavin Griffiths and Alex Evans opened the attack for the Foxes, Tyler McGladdery and Jesse Dinnie opening up for Derbyshire CCC.

Leicestershire CCC struck in the second over of the morning when Evans had the left-handed McGladdery (1, 9b) caught behind by 'keeper Sam Bates. A regulation catch for Bates just above waist height moving towards first slip. The next man to go was another left-hander, Dinnie (12, 16b), when he was snaffled at second slip by Kimber off the bowling of Griffiths. Derbyshire 19-2 from 6.2 overs.

Ewan Cox (2, 9b) was next to go, expertly caught by Mike at backward point off the bowling of Griffiths. Derbyshire CCC 33-3 from 10.1 overs. The next over, bowled by Evans from the Pavilion End, yielded two wickets.

Wood took three runs from the first delivery, and the next ball Evans had Fynn Hudson-Prentice (4, 6b) caught and bowled, a fine reaction catch. The final ball of the over brought the wicket of Ben Hutchinson (0, 4b) who was trapped in front. Derbyshire CCC in all sorts of trouble on 40-5 from 12 overs.

Wood (26, 53b) was standing firm, but was on his way when he edged a delivery from Mike down the leg-side to be superbly caught by ‘keeper Bates. The Groby Gloveman dived to his left to take a catch ‘Schmeichelesque’ with both hands. Derbyshire CCC on the ropes 50-6 from 18.4.

Only last Tuesday Leicestershire CCC had taken 10 Yorkshire CCC wickets in the morning session. A repeat was not to be however as Smit and Connor Marshall staged a mini recovery for Derbyshire. The pair took the total to 83-6 from 31 overs when the umpires took the players from the field 5 minutes before lunch due to rain.

After lunch only 5.2 overs were possible before bad light caused a stoppage at 2.16pm. This eventually turned to heavy rain. Tea was taken, but with no sign of the rain relenting play was abandoned for the day at 4.23pm. Derbyshire CCC 98-6 with Smit (32*, 71b) and Marshall (17*, 51b).

The wicket-takers for Leicestershire CCC were Evans 3-25 from 10 overs, Griffiths 2-25 from 9, and Mike 1-30 from 7.2.
