REPORT | Torrential rain caused the abandonment of the rain-affected Specsavers County Championship game between Leicestershire CCC and Middlesex CCC at the Fischer County Ground.

The groundstaff worked wonders yesterday to allow eleven overs of play, but that was the only cricket played during the four days. Middlesex CCC added a bowling bonus point to their match haul.

Leicestershire CCC posted 36 for three with opening batsman Hassan Azad posting 17 not out in that period.

Although the rain relented for the briefest of periods this morning it did not even allow for one final inspection by umpires Steve O'Shaughnessy and Ulhas Gandhe at 10.45am. At this point the ground was totally saturated and the rain was pouring down again.

Puddles of water formed on the outfield and the final day was unsurpisingly abandoned, meaning the Foxes took five points from the draw.

A slight consolation for the Foxes was that the match did not become the first Specsavers County Championship washout at the Fischer County Ground since Warwickshire CCC were the visitors back in 1997.

It was the year between County Championship title wins for County - a summer where huge amounts of cricket were lost to precipitation.

Leicestershire CCC only lost once throughout the season but had 11 draws and the total abandonment from their 17 fixtures.

Without the rain, the Foxes may well have made it back-to-back County Championship successes and been in a position to make it three in a row in 1998.

The last time Leicestershire CCC suffered a complete four-day abandonment was the game against Glamorgan CCC at Abergavenny in 2007.

Attentions now turn to the next Specsavers County Championship challenge with Gloucestershire CCC the visitors on Monday.
