REPORT | The final day of a nip and tuck Specsavers County Championship game ultimately ended in disappointment for Leicestershire CCC as Derbyshire CCC recorded a 65-run victory.

County started the day with six second innings wickets in hand to get the 124 further runs required to emerge victorious.

All-rounder Luis Reece claimed two early wickets of overnight batsmen Hassan Azad (44) and Harry Dearden (14) and the visitors built on that platform.

So a close battle, in which the No.3 batsman top-scored in each of the four innings with scores ranging from 44 to 51, and wickets generally shared around the respective bowling units, went the way of our East Midlands rivals.

With five balls of the uncompleted 40th over to face, Dearden was on strike and soon drove Reece for four as he and Azad saw the Foxes over the halfway mark of the 234 needed.

Azad, who had been at the crease for over six hours before play got underway in the final day was finally dismissed in the game  after outside-edging Reece’s delivery to Wayne Madsen at first slip.

Dearden was then trapped in front by the left arm seamer and Leicestershire CCC were 128 for six, still requiring 106 to win.

Dieter Klein - fresh off his 200th first-class wicket - came in to replace Dearden and was the next batsman to be dismissed.

After making 5, the batsman nicked a delivery from Logan van Beek and Matt Critchley took a juggling effort at third slip.

At the crease were Lewis Hill and Chris Wright as the Foxes were in need of a partnership now more than even, as they had slipped to 133 for seven.

The duo of Hill (6) and Wright (11*) shared 16 before the wicket-keeper was dismissed by Ravi Rampaul after edging it through to the wicketkeeper Hosein.

Hosein and Rampaul again combined nine minutes later for the wicket of former Derbyshire CCC man Will Davis (2).

Muhammad Abbas came in as the final batsman and got off to a good start, earning himself two boundaries and 11 runs in total.

Unfortunately though, Abbas’ stay at the crease was ended after Tony Palladino bowled the Pakistan international to end with match figures of seven for 59.

Leicestershire CCC’s next challenge in the Specsavers County Championship comes on Monday against leaders Lancashire CCC at Aigburth.
