REPORT | Hassan Azad posts and unbeaten 83 as rain brings a premature end to the final day of cricket for 2019.
Leicestershire earn their second County Championship draw against the Division Two champions.
It took four balls into the final day of the season for Lancashire to take their first wicket of the innings, as skipper Paul Horton was bowled by Richard Gleeson for 30 – Gleeson’s seventh of the contest.
Colin Ackermann came in to replace Horton and got off the mark with a four from his first ball, clipping Gleeson through square leg.
Ackermann accelerated into the thirties before the lunch interval came up at its regular time of 12:30pm, hitting the Lancashire seam attack for eight fours.
Azad also picked up a few more boundaries before the interval, as County headed into the break on 94 for 1 - Azad 20no and Ackermann 37no.
The duo came back out after the lunch break, and Hassan Azad went on to bring up his eighth half-century of the year after hitting Liam Hurt for back-to-back boundaries - the half-century came off 113 balls and included 10 fours.
Leicestershire then lost their second wicket, as Ackermann got a slight nick on Gleeson’s delivery and Dane Vilas caught the South African behind for 49.
Mark Cosgrove (2) then came to the crease and lasted 14 balls before his wicket was up. Gleeson again claimed the scalp as the Australian got more of an edge than Ackermann, but not enough as it flew straight to Bailey at first slip.
George Rhodes then came to bat and successfully saw out the second session alongside Hassan Azad as Leicestershire headed in for tea on 181 for 3.
Hassan Azad was on course for a fourth Specsavers County Championship century as he entered tea on an imperious 176-ball 80no, and Rhodes had posted 9no from his 34 balls faced.
However, with the time approaching 4:00pm, the heavens then opened once again in Leicestershire and with it, County declared on 191 for 3.
Hassan Azad finished an incredible inaugural season of professional cricket with an unbeaten 83 as the Division Two top run scorer with 1,189, alongside fellow Leicestershire newcomer for 2019; George Rhodes on 16.
The captains shook hands on a draw to bring a close to the 2019 campaign.
