Foxes return to County Championship action

Leicestershire CCC return to Specsavers County Championship action tomorrow (September 10) with the visit of Northamptonshire CCC to the Fischer County Ground, following the conclusion of the 2019 Vitality Blast campaign.

Leicestershire head into the final stretch of the season without Pakistan International Muhammad Abbas who was recalled by Pakistan ahead of their October test series with Sri Lanka.

Paul Horton, Hassan Azad and Neil Dexter return for selection, as well as George Rhodes being a potential addition following his move from Worcestershire CCC.

Head Coach Paul Nixon said: “We have got to finish well, this time last year we finished poorly in the County Championship.

“I think it is really important that we all step up as individuals and give it our all for the next three games of cricket.

“Northamptonshire are pushing for promotion and will be right up for it, so we have to be up for it as well – it will be a good contest.”

Leicestershire will have had a 10-day break since playing their last game by the time they get underway against Northamptonshire tomorrow (September 10), but Nixon is sure that they will be ready despite a long lay-off from red ball cricket: “We have had some good practice time this last week and quite a few of our guys have played in the second time down in the Second Eleven Championship final at the Rose Bowl.

“We have tried to maximise the amount of players getting back into red ball cricket.

“We have had a good session this morning in our indoor centre and tomorrow we will get in early ready for a good practice.”

With the omission of Muhammad Abbas from the Foxes squad, this has made room for Alex Evans to join up with the named 13-man squad - a chance Nixon highlights he has carved out for himself: “He has been phenomenal this year.

“He has worked really hard in the gym and has put himself in contention.

“He has produced match winning contributions in the second team, he has been very consistent, and it could be an exciting day for him.”

Further to the addition of Evans, George Rhodes comes in to the 13-man squad for the first time following his arrival from Worcestershire CCC: “George is a very mature young man who has been a little bit hard done by, I feel.

“He is a very good cricketer – he bats, he bowls he fields. He has a lot of time when he bats and he is a consistent player, a lad who has been in and out of the team and just needs a bit of backing.

“I think he will add a bit of steel to our Club.”

Leicestershire CCC (from 13): Paul Horton (capt), Colin Ackermann, Hassan Azad, Mark Cosgrove, Will Davis, Neil Dexter, Alex Evans, Gavin Griffiths, Dieter Klein, Callum Parkinson, George Rhodes, Harry Swindells (wk), Chris Wright.
