REPORT | Leicestershire CCC began their 2020 Bob Willis Trophy campaign against the 2019 County Championship winners Lancashire CCC in Worcester.
After winning the toss and electing to bat on a good pitch, Lancashire CCC progressed to 265 for six from 90 overs at Blackfinch New Road as Dieter Klein picked up three wickets for the visitors.
The Running Foxes had played the Red Rose county in the final game of the 2019 campaign and showed two changes to that team as opening batsman Ben Slater came in for debut and all-rounder Tom Taylor returned to the line-up.
2020 began in similar fashion to 2019, with an early wicket on the first day of red ball action. Last year it was Chris Wright who took the early wicket at Sussex, but this time it was new ball partner Taylor who began explosively by pinning Keaton Jennings (5) LBW with just his fourth delivery of the season.
In came Josh Bohannon at three for Lancashire CCC and began to form a promising looking partnership alongside Alex Davies.
Lancashire CCC were heading for their fiftieth run before Davies (21) was caught superbly off Klein at mid-wicket by George Rhodes, who found himself beginning the 2020 season at the home of his previous club, Worcestershire CCC.
The Running Foxes were making Lancashire CCC work hard for their runs, and they brought up fifty in the nineteenth over from a flick out to the leg-side from Rob Jones off the bowling of Ben Mike.
Lunch then came with Lancashire CCC at 72 for two, Bohannon dangerously poised sitting on 33, partnered by Jones on 11.
Lancashire CCC’s third wicket fell in the fourth over of the second session of the day as Klein speared in a superb delivery of yorker length. Jones (12) was the victim as the ball swung back in and snuck under his attempted shot to strike his off-stump.
Captain Dane Vilas emerged to partner Bohannon in the middle as they looked to form a crucial partnership in the first innings.
The alliance, though, only lasted 15 runs before Bohannon (44) attempted to pull Klein’s delivery which he could only flick through to ‘keeper Harry Swindells, who caught his first of the season.
Lancashire CCC now found themselves at 97 for four with a shift of momentum in Leicestershire CCC's favour.
Steven Croft was the new man, and the partnership of Vilas and Croft saw each batsman begin to impose themselves upon the tie.
Ten minutes before the tea break and Lancashire skipper Vilas moved on to his fifty which came from 72 balls including eight fours. Lancashire CCC were now looking in a better position sitting on 164 for four.
Meanwhile, Leicestershire’ CCCs attack had seen the arrival of captain Colin Ackermann and further use of spinner Callum Parkinson as they looked to tie Lancashire CCC down and break the fifth wicket partnership.
The Running Foxes could not claim the fifth wicket before tea though as Lancashire CCC headed into the final break sitting on 171 for four.
The beginning of the evening session saw more of the same from Lancashire CCC, and in-particular Vilas who played well to take his side past the 200-run mark.
Vilas (90) looked like he was moving towards an opening day ton before he edged a Taylor delivery through to Hassan Azad in the slips, who hung on to dismiss the Lancashire CCC captain.
A huge wicket for Leicestershire CCC as they finally broke the 130-run partnership of Vilas and Croft.
Following his captain’s dismissal, Croft soon moved on to his half-century which came up after 105 balls, including five fours.
Parkinson continued to bowl a tight spell and as play came towards an end, Ackermann rapped Croft (63) on the pads after he got one to turn back to the batsman. The umpire raised his finger and the Running Foxes finished the day in style.
The duo of George Balderson and Danny Lamb saw the home side through to the end of the first day of Bob Willis Trophy action as Lancashire finished on 265 for six.
