A tribute to Phil Wright

Leicestershire County Cricket Club is deeply saddened by the tragic news that a huge member of the Foxes Family, Phil Wright, passed away yesterday evening.

Phil, affectionately known to everyone at the club and on the county circuit as ‘Big Phil’ was Dressing Room Attendant for many years at Grace Road.

As someone who went about his work in a kind, gentle and helpful manner, Phil was admired and respected by the Foxes Family and everybody that visited the ground.

Leicestershire CCC Head Coach Paul Nixon, who knew Phil for many years, has led the tributes.

He said: “We are all absolutely devastated to hear about Big Phil, who was loved by everyone here. When we won a game, he would be the happiest man on the ground, and if we lost, he would have some words of comfort for us all.

“I spoke to him just last week and he was looking forward to coming in and seeing everyone when the pandemic eased. Phil cared so much about our club and did anything he could to help.

“We all have so many happy memories of Phil and can recall a moment where he did something lovely to help. I will never forget the way he looked after my mum when she came to the ground. We cared about Phil a great deal and we will miss him dearly.”

Leicestershire CCC Chief Executive Sean Jarvis added: “I have heard many stories about Phil and know how much he was loved and respected here.

“On behalf of myself, the Board of Directors, staff, players and everyone connected with Leicestershire County Cricket Club, I would like to send our thoughts and deepest condolences to Phil’s family and friends. We will miss him.”

When Phil was sadly taken to hospital earlier this year, messages of support flooded in. If you would like to pay tribute to Phil, please email foxes@leicestershireccc.co.uk and we will pass them on to Phil’s family.

Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Phil’s family and friends at this extremely difficult time.
